When I thought about developing an international retreat for our Sugar River Yarns community, I knew it had to be in a special place where history, landscape, and craft blur together. That is exactly why I chose the Lake District of England for our very first Sugar River Yarns Knitting Retreat, taking place from March 15th to 19th, 2027.

England’s Lake District is a region of quiet, dramatic beauty, defined by its glassy waters, rugged fells, and deep green valleys. It is a landscape that encourages you to slow down, cast on a new project, and look out the window. It’s no wonder it has fueled the imagination of artists for generations. During our time there, we will be walking in the footsteps of some of the area's most famous residents who shared a love for this land. We'll explore the charming corners that inspired Beatrix Potter’s beloved illustrations and visit the places where Romantic poet William Wordsworth penned his most famous verses.

But a spectacular location is only half of the journey; the heart of any great retreat is the community and the learning. I am thrilled that the incredible Susan Crawford will be our hostess and instructor. I have long admired Susan’s extraordinary talent for making complex colorwork accessible, logical, and deeply rewarding for knitters of all skill levels. If you’ve ever felt intimidated by stranded knitting or choosing the right palette, Susan has a rare gift for breaking it down so that it simply clicks. Under her guidance in our workshop, you'll gain the confidence to tackle new techniques while surrounded by the very hills that inspired the traditional British wools we love.

I very carefully curated a retreat that would have a good blend of world-class knitting instruction, opportunities to enjoy the natural beauty of the Lake District, and thoughtful excursions, all paired with excellent food and cozy, welcoming accommodations. I created an itinerary with the intention that  you can just sit back, relax, and enjoy yourself in this enchanting place from the moment you arrive.
