Shetland Wool Week Hat Kits - Jamieson & Smith (no pattern)
The Aal Ower Toorie Hat Kit - Official 2025 Shetland Wool Week Design
This gorgeous stranded knitting hat is everything we love about Fair Isle: intricate colorwork, rich heritage, and that deeply satisfying rhythm of working with two colors. The Aal Ower Toorie, this year's official Shetland Wool Week design, is a stunning celebration of vintage craftsmanship reimagined for today's knitters.
The hat features a diamond grid allover pattern that creates movement and depth across the entire crown and body. Unlike simpler Fair Isle designs with isolated motifs, this continuous pattern requires attention and rewards you with that meditative flow that serious stranded knitters crave. The geometric precision of the diamonds creates beautiful negative space while the vibrant color combinations bring each motif to life. It's the kind of pattern that looks complex from a distance but reveals its logical, rhythmic structure as you work – exactly what makes traditional Shetland knitting so addictive.
Designed by Rachel Hunter of the Shetland Guild of Spinners, Knitters, Weavers and Dyers, this beautiful toorie draws its inspiration from a 1930s allover pattern discovered in the Guild's own A Shetlander's Fair Isle Graph Book. The vibrant colorwork echoes the spirit of Chris Morphet's 'Allover' exhibition at the Shetland Museum, capturing the bold graphic impact and subtle sophistication of vintage Fair Isle knitwear.
Our kits feature Jamieson & Smith 2-ply Jumper Weight, that much-loved Shetland yarn that knits like a dream and creates the most beautiful, even tension for stranded colorwork. Hat kits contain the 8 balls of J&S in the designer’s pre-selected colorways, and a sweet SRY project bag. Select from yarn packs with the following colors:

The name "Aal Ower" speaks to both the pattern's continuous design and the Guild members who live "all over" Shetland, a lovely nod to the community that keeps these traditions alive. This is stranded knitting at its most satisfying: challenging enough to keep you engaged, beautiful enough to wear with pride, and deeply connected to generations of island knitters.
