I know this newsletter is long overdue! As always, summer flew by, and the staff and I have enjoyed having some much-needed vacation time from the shop as well. I hope you are enjoying these final weeks of summer, too. I was reminded that at this time last year, we were closing up our first little shop and preparing for our move here—and now we’re coming up on a year in our current location!
As we’ve settled in, I’ve been thinking a lot about what I want Sugar River Yarns to look like going forward. One thing that has become clearer this past year is which yarns are going to be part of our core collection. I’ve always chosen yarns based on more than just whether I like the yarn itself. The fiber, construction, colors, and how it feels in your hands all matter—but so does the company behind it. I want to continue building relationships with companies that share our values and fit the kind of shop we’re creating. As the shop has grown and the industry has changed, our inventory needs to evolve, too.
That means making some changes to what we currently carry. We are closing out several brands we’ve carried through the Local Crafts Group and Berroco umbrella, including Berroco, LANG, Amano, and West Yorkshire Spinners (WYS). We’ve enjoyed carrying these yarns, and I know many of you have favorites among them, so it’s bittersweet to see them go. But shelf space is finite, and making room for what’s next means making some choices about what stays. Be sure to take advantage of some great prices on these lovely yarns below while supplies last.
I’m especially excited about the companies we’ll be making more room for, including Harrisville, CaMaRose, Biches & Bûches, Universal, Cascade, and Plymouth. These are companies whose yarns fit beautifully into the mix we’re building, and I’m looking forward to giving them more space in the shop. The goal isn’t to have the biggest selection possible. It’s to have a really good selection. One that gives you choices and reflects what we value at Sugar River Yarns.
Summer is flying by, and before we know it, we’ll be heading into autumn! And on that note, don’t forget to save the date for the next Madtown Yarn Shop Hop, October 8–11! Of course, Sugar River Yarns will be part of it again this year, and we’re already making plans to make it a really special event here at the shop!
We want to extend a warm welcome to Madison’s newest LYS, Isthmus Yarns! We’re excited to have another local yarn shop in our fiber community and look forward to welcoming them to the Shop Hop this fall.
I’m really excited about what we’re building as we head into our second year here, and there’s a lot more to come. I’m also excited to have some new faces around the shop! Please join me in welcoming Connie and Alyssa, and welcome back from your internship, Violet. We’re so happy to have you all here.
